Moshi Monsters Mash Up Trading Card Game

Moshi Monsters is an in depth online community targeted towards 6-12 year olds. You or your kids may have at one point owned at played with a handheld electronic pet such as Tamagotchi, Giga Pets, or many others. Moshi Monsters is along those lines only WAY more in depth. It is also similar to Neopets but generally geared towards a slightly younger age group. Also, unlike the Neopets site, Moshi Monsters doesn't have any sort of gambling games on the site and generally is an overall safer online environment for your young ones.

I recently read that 1 out of every 2 children ages 6-12 in the United Kingdom has a Moshi Monsters account and 1 out of every 5 6-12 year olds in the United States do as well. So, if you have a child, grandchild, niece, nephew, etc in this age group you will likely hear them speak about Moshi Monsters pretty soon if they aren't already!

Stemming from the websites success Moshi Monsters has begun releasing various physical items as well. One of the first such products they have introduced is the Moshi Monsters Mash-Up Trading Card Game. The card game was released in the United Kingdom in the fall of 2010 and started showing up in the United States in early to mid February 2011. In the UK packs contain 5 cards plus 1 code card which contains a unique code which can be entered into the website to unlock cool stuff. The US packs contain 7 cards and 1 code card. Not sure why they weren't consistent with the number of cards per pack but the US packs include 2 extra cards and naturally cost a little bit more at retail.. about $2 per pack.

The card game itself can be compared to the basic card game of war where the highest number wins. Each card in the Moshi Monsters Mash-Up game has 2 scores on the front of the card. A 'mash' score and a 'mosh score.' Each player (2 players total) starts off with 8 of the cards face down in front of them. Player 1 turns over any one of their cards and choses to either 'mash' or 'mosh' and use the score shows below their choice. Player 2 then also reveals one of their face down cards and must use the opposite choice as Player 1. Thus, if Player 1 chooses to Mash, then player 2 must Mosh. This goes on until all the cards have been revealed. Whoever wins the most rounds wins the game.

Like most collectible card games, Moshi Monsters Mash Up also has insert cards. Regular foil cards appear in 1 out of every 3 packs on average. Rainbow Foil cards, which are essentially the same as regular foil except when the light hits them in the right away you can see the colors of the rainbow within the cards, appear 1 out of every 5 packs on average. In general, the insert cards have higher/better mash and mosh scores and thus are more likely to win in the game. There is actually 1 rainbow foil card, I.G.G.Y., which has a score of 100 (the max) for both mash and mosh. Truly an unbeatable card!
